Xavi Continues as Barcelona Head Coach

Barcelona FC have announced that Xavi is to remain as the principal coach, reneging on his earlier intent to depart from the team when the season ended. The 44-year-old Xavi, who during his successful playing days made over 500 appearances for Barcelona, declared in January of this year, he would step back, citing his side needed a fresh approach. However, after discussions with the top management of the club, he changed his mind, an update which was made official by Joan Laporta, the club’s president, on a Thursday.

During a press briefing, Laporta expressed his satisfaction stating: “Xavi will continue his duties as Barca’s coach, which is tremendous news.” Xavi, succeeding Ronald Koeman in November 2021 at Nou Camp when the team was positioned ninth in the LaLiga scoreboard, 10 points behind their toughest competition, Real Madrid and 11 points from the top, will remain under contract until the summer of 2025.

Having declared his intention to leave prematurely following a 5-3 loss to Villarreal on 27th January at home, he then led 13 games unbeaten in all events, until suffering a home defeat by a 4-1 scoreline to Paris St Germain, subsequently dashing their Champions League aspirations during the quarter-finals. Currently, Barcelona is positioned second in the LaLiga rankings, deficit of 11 points behind Madrid, with only six games to go, the earlier imminent departure of their head coach now retracted.

Xavi mentioned: “Being a massive supporter of Barca myself, I profoundly trust the president together with the board of directors. The players’ overriding assistance and understanding have also been a crucial component.” He affirmed that to remain as the head coach is in the best interests of the club, with several strategic options to maintain its successful status. Addressing the fans’ reaction, Xavi added, “Interestingly, the fans have made it apparent that the task isn’t over, particularly their unwavering faith. I’m immensely grateful for their unwavering support and adoration.”
