A 25-year-old female has been accused of carrying out an assault by beating and instigating criminal damage, having thrown a milkshake over Nigel Farage, the head of the UK’s Reform Party. The incident occurred in the southeast town of Clacton-on-Sea during Farage’s pursuit of a parliamentary seat as he exited a local pub. Although Farage didn’t appear injured, he later joked about the unexpected event on social media.
The woman responsible is set to face court proceedings on July 2nd. Notably, this isn’t the first time Farage has been the victim of a milkshake attack; back in 2019, whilst rallying for the Brexit Party – Reform’s antecedent – in Newcastle, he got milkshaked before the Euro Parliament election.
The individual responsible for the 2019 milkshake attack faced legal consequences, having to pay for the cleaning of Farage’s suit after admitting guilt to common assault and criminal damage.
In other UK political news, Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, was accused by the Labour Party of being dishonest during a pre-election debate. The Labour Party alleges that Sunak falsely claimed that the party intended to raise taxes for each household by £2,000 (€2,300). This claim was asserted repeatedly during a televised debate with the Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer.
Sunak had previously stated that Labour policies would lead to a £38.5 billion (€45 billion) deficit over the ensuing four years, should the party come into power. However, the Labour Party disputes this claim. The top official of Britain’s finance ministry even released a letter, indicating that civil servants hadn’t been a part of the calculation process and therefore the estimate couldn’t be presented as an official one.
Labour maintains that Sunak was spreading falsehoods during the debate. Rachel Reeves, a top economic policy officer for Labour, has outright rejected suggestions of increases in income tax and social security contributions over the next parliamentary term. Furthermore, queries were raised regarding why Starmer didn’t rebut Sunak’s claims more swiftly during the debate.
Keir Starmer made it evident last night that the statements from the prime minister were sheer nonsense, according to her. Even escalating it further, she claimed that the prime minister was dishonest in last night’s conversation about the Labour Party’s fiscal plans. “The Labour Party doesn’t intend to hike taxes for hardworking individuals. I assert this with certainty.”
Mr. Sunak reinforced his allegation on Wednesday through a social media outlet named X where he posted a video containing a colossal piggy bank hovering in the air. He reiterated his accusation and added, “Start saving if you anticipate a victory for Labour.” – Reuters
