Win Luxurious Carton House Stay

Just half an hour away from Dublin, in County Kildare’s countryside, lies the lavish five-star resort, Carton House, a hotel run by Fairmont. Embedded within a staggering 1,100 acres of private park terrain, the resort is not just a haven for two championship standard golf courses, but also luxe spa and healthcare facilities. It is a place ideal for outdoor activities such as biking, tennis, trail-walking, golf and angling. It provides an excellent getaway for you, your mates, significant other or kin. We are giving you an opportunity to grab the prize of an opulent overnight getaway for two, inclusive of breakfast, dinner at Kathleen’s Kitchen, and their newly inaugurated Iconic Afternoon Tea, in one of their breathtaking guest suites.

This Iconic Afternoon Tea at Carton House, also run by Fairmont, whimsically honours various esteemed guests who have lodged at the resort over the years by weaving stories about them into their tea serving. The tea service is available from Thursday to Sunday each week and the menu epitomises the classic combination of sweet and savoury treats and new unique offerings tailored to commemorate past famous visitors. For instance, a tribute to Queen Victoria, who stayed in the Chinese Boudoir specially decorated for her during her visits to Carton House in 1849 and 1897, is a timeless Victoria sponge with a fresh strawberry and cream filling offered on the Iconic Afternoon Tea menu, in her honour.

While shooting the film Darling Lili in the summer and autumn of 1969, award-winning actress and skilled baker Dame Julie Andrews resided at Carton House, Fairmont. The carrot cake served there is modelled on her own recipe. Famous singer Lana Del Ray chose this location to indulge her love for luxury and history during her stay in Ireland. The sweet apple dessert with a dash of cinnamon honours one of Del Ray’s songs – ‘Radio’, with its lyric “Now my life’s sweet like cinnamon.” In 1963, Princess Grace of Monaco, along with her husband Prince Ranier III and their children, spent three weeks vacationing at Carton House. A charming peanut butter ganache chocolate which mimics the Hermès Kelly handbag is featured in their Iconic Afternoon Tea menu, as a tribute to Princess Grace’s timeless elegance.

Rock star Mick Jagger was a repeated visitor to this location while his partner Marianne Faithful was residing in Shell Cottage on the premises for seven years. The “Ruby Tuesday Velvet Cake” on the menu is named after his band Rolling Stones’ popular track “Ruby Tuesday”.

Film director Stanley Kubrick also spent considerable time at Carton House Fairmont while directing two films- the noteworthy Barry Lyndon in 1975 and The Big Red One in 1980. The orange chocolate cheesecake in the Iconic Afternoon Tea menu is a nod to Kubrick’s famed film, A Clockwork Orange.

The Iconic Afternoon Tea is served from Thursday to Sunday in the traditionally aristocratic lounges- from the Gold Salon with its decorative painted ceiling, the Drawing Room with its elegant trimwork, to the beautiful views of the Rose Garden. The enchanting vistas have thrilled guests for nearly three centuries.
