Why Rent Caps Fail

Dear Editor,

Klaas Knot, the president of the Dutch central bank, has vocalised his support for overturning rent control measures in the Netherlands, citing statistical evidence of their failures. This serves as a wake-up call for the Irish Government, who should recognise the disparities between appearing to be proactive and implementing truly effective strategies.

The singular method for mitigating rental costs is to upturn the existing supply. It is clear that rent controls do not serve this purpose as they inadvertently deter an increase in supply.
