The Romans, it seems, do not love the Vittoriano; a huge monument dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy.
It was completed in 1935 when Italy was ruled by Mussolini and W.
W.
2 was looming on the horizon.
The monument which also holds the tomb of the unknown soldier has always been laughed at by the inhabitants of the city; attracting over the years a number of rather funny knicknames such as typewriter, wedding cake or denture! On the other hand the place has always been a great favourite with tourists and now that two new lifts have just been inaugurated it will take just a few seconds to reach the top and enjoy a breath-taking view of Rome.
It will cost you only 7 euros.
Opening hours: Sunday – Thursday 9:30 am-7:30 pm; Fridays and Saturdays 9:30 am-11:30 pm
