What Are You Apologising For?

Dear Editor,

I read with interest Margaret Butler’s reply to Patsy McGarry’s column on language (Letters, September 17th) and realised we shared a similar incident. This occurred on the first day of my teaching career at an English institute in South Korea.

Trying to grab the notice of a fellow tutor, I used “Sorry?” It led to the tutor spinning around, questioning me with: “For what?” – With Regards,
FIONN Ó hÓGÁIN,
Co Down.
