To whom it may concern, – Michael Lillis wrote an important letter that was published on October 12th, underlining the pivotal role played by the US president, Jimmy Carter, in Ireland’s path of evolution and peace-making in the North. This reminds me of my interaction with Mr Carter and his spouse, Rosalynn, at the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin, during either 2010 or 2011.
Our minister at the time, Mary Hanafin, paved the way for me to accompany the Carters on a tour of the national archaeological galleries, a tremendous honour. I found Mr Carter to be the most engrossed and genuinely interested dignitary I have guided around the museum during my 24-year tenure as director. His sincere fascination and respect was particularly evident when we encountered the holy artefacts of the ancient Christian Church.
Mr Carter, a lanky individual attired in a lengthy tweed jacket, radiated a sincere and warm-hearted acknowledgement of our journey together. Of all the notable figures I have greeted over the years, he remains the most influential. His loving attentiveness towards his wife was also remarkable.
