Dear Editor,
Following the decision of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to prohibit the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), the organization responsible for the operation of Dublin Airport, from acquiring the Santry-based QuickPark car parking facility, those of us who hope to park at Dublin Airport this summer will have to set aside the equivalent of a short vacation’s budget (“Regulators halt Dublin Airport’s attempt at easing summer parking scarcity, causing passenger disruption”, Business, 21st March). A particularly Irish complication with a distinctively Irish resolution.
Would it not be simpler for the authorities in control to impose a limit on parking charges at the airport? Given that the DAA belongs to the state and, therefore, its ultimate stakeholders are the citizens of this nation, these policies would not be overly complex to put into effect. Perhaps, at its core, it’s an underhanded tactic to encourage people to holiday within Ireland.
