“Valhalla’s Three Key Risk-Reward Holes”

The 7th hole, referred to as the ‘Genuine Risk’, is a spacious 597-yard Par 5. This title pays homage to the 1980 Kentucky Derby champion, emphasising the risky-nature of the golf course nestled in the bluegrass locality known for horse racing. A crucial strategic decision arises for golfers at the tee; if they choose the island-like left side, it provides a quicker path home, with a shot at reaching the green in two. However, this comes with a risky 26-yard narrow landing area. Selecting the right side might be safer, but it entails a lengthy and challenging approach towards the green especially for players hoping to find the green in two. It’s significant to note that it was this spot where Tiger Woods accomplished an essential chip-in that contributed to his victory in 2000.

Moving onto the 13th hole, known as ‘The Limestone Hole’, it extends across 351 yards classified as Par 4. This unique hole, skilfully crafted by Jack Nicklaus, is theoretically drivable Par 4, beckoning more daring players to utilise the “big stick”. Nonetheless, many golfers decide to play it safe, preferring to use an iron or hybrid off the tee. The hole’s most distinguishing feature is the unconventional green built atop a limestone rock bed, encircled by a hazard. Even if players opt for safety off the tee, they still encounter difficulties due to several strategically located fairway bunkers.

Lastly, the 18th hole, fittingly called ‘Photo Finish’, stretches over 570 yards and is classified as Par 5. This imaginative title echoes horse racing terminology and aptly depicts the dramatic ending to the 2014 PGA, when Rory McIlroy astoundingly pulled off his tee shot avoiding the hazard, finishing in near darkness. Despite ranking as the easiest hole of the 2014 competition – with an average of 4.49 – its potential for either birdie or an eagle amplifies the hole’s anticipation and excitement. Adding to its thrilling reputation, the boomerang-like green features various levels, marking it as a high stakes finale hole.
