“Uruguayan Footballer Dies After Match Collapse”

The Uruguayan football community is mourning the untimely death of Juan Izquierdo, a cherished professional footballer who passed away at 27. Izquierdo tragically succumbed five days after experiencing a sudden collapse during a game in Brazil.

His shocking collapse occurred in the 84th minute, without any other player’s involvement. He was promptly removed from the field and transported by ambulance to the intensive care unit of the Albert Einstein Hospital. The hospital revealed that Izquierdo’s tragic demise was the result of brain death due to cardiac arrhythmia leading to a cardiopulmonary arrest.

In a heart-touching statement, Club Nacional of Uruguay lamentably announced the death of the beloved player, Izquierdo. The Club extended their heartful condolences to his family, friends, fellow players and everyone associated with him.

The recorded messages of condolences were not only limited to Uruguay. The Argentinian, Peruvian, Paraguayan and Colombian football associations expressed their sorrow for Izquierdo’s demise, reflecting such loss’s impact beyond borders. Alejandro Dominguez, the president of the South American football governing body, Conmebol, expressed his grief, marking it a solemn period for all of South American football.

Ednaldo Rodrigues, the Brazilian Football Federation president, announced that a silence of one minute would be maintained during every federation-organised match on the following Wednesday. Sao Paulo also registered their deep sorrow regarding the event, terming it a “gloomy day for football”.

Prior to his demise, Izquierdo was serving his second tenure with the Nacional, having guided them to their first league title in over 100 years in 2023.
