“United Ireland Most Desirable, Ahern Claims”

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern stated that a unified Ireland is the “optimal option for Irish citizens and communities”. Ahern, an instrumental figure in the Belfast Agreement discussions in 1998 and ex-leader of Fianna Fáil, mentioned that the goal of unity is not something to be accomplished quickly. Those supporting Irish unification should brace themselves to work diligently, he added.

Ahern is slated to participate in a New Ireland Commission function at Leinster House on Tuesday. The dialogue is expected to concentrate on the SDLP initiative’s objective of shaping a detailed plan for Irish unity, utilising the insight of Irish leaders who have committed significant effort to the cause of peace.

Ahead of the event, Ahern declared his strong belief that a fresh vision for Ireland is achievable as outlined in the Good Friday Agreement, where a new Ireland would be based on the consent of its inhabitants. This vision not only feasible, but also the best possible result for people and communities across Ireland, he mentioned.

The prospectus to bridge traditional societal discrepancies must galvanize supporters of change and reassure unionists that their traditions and rights will be safeguarded and their progeny will find their place in the Ireland of tomorrow, he stated.

Furthermore, SDLP leader Colum Eastwood affirmed his party’s devotion to engage and collaborate with communities and individuals across the islands to chart a path for change. Eastwood expressed his eagerness to hear Ahern’s insights and work towards the creation of a fresh, inclusive Ireland for everyone.
