Unembellished Truths and Luxuriant Locks

“Dear Editor,

I would like to express my appreciation for Joe Humphreys’ effort to provide some comfort to Frank Lampard as he confronts his thinning hair, using philosophical concepts (Unthinkable, 24th June). He suggested three ideas that can be a comfort to anyone staring down a future where their pate is more polished than posh, however he brushed over the pleasure that can be derived from employing one’s growing baldness as unassailable proof in thinking philosophically.

Long before Stoics steeled themselves for the first time, one of the earliest philosophies was proposed by Heraclitus. Around the year 500 B.C., he famously propounded “panta rhei” or “everything flows”. Now, I can directly counter this assertion by stating my hair certainly does not follow the ‘everything flows’ theory anymore. — Yours,
BRIAN O’BRIEN,
