Research has proved Vitamin D can help to contrast the virus, UK government has now taken steps to deliver it to vulnerable people.
In the past months, scientists have underlined the possibility of Vitamin D to fight covid, now UK government has decided to deliver it to contrast the virus.
This comes after calls from experts to underline the importance of Vitamin D in the fight against Covid-19. In fact, low levels of Vitamin D reportedly lead to a greater risk to catch the virus or to suffer worst effects. In the past months, researchers have been studying the correlation between the vitamin and the virus, for instance, in Spain experts had found that 82% of coronavirus patients out of 216 admitted to hospital had low levels of Vitamin D. Medical physics researcher, Dr Gareth Davies confirmed: “In my opinion, it is clear that vitamin D could not only protect against disease severity but could also protect against infection”.
After a growing body of evidence supports the Vitamin D- Covid correlation, the UK government has decided to roll out the supplement for vulnerable communities. Health administration will deliver the vitamin directly to care homes and supplies will run for 4 months. The Scottish government is also applying a similar move, in the hope of fighting the virus easing the work of the NHS. Prime Minister Boris Johnson affirmed: “We are indeed looking at the possible beneficial effects of Vitamin D, and… we will be updating the House shortly… We are going to make sure those most in need of Vitamin D can access a free supply over the winter months. Some studies suggest Vitamin D supplementation could have a positive impact for people suffering with Covid-19,”
Health Secretary Matt Hancock had also confirmed: “I have asked the scientists to look once again at the impact of Vitamin D on resistance and immunity. There has been some updated evidence that has come to light in the past few weeks, and I want to ensure that it is fully taken into account.”
