Professor Tom Garvin, a long-standing political professor and author at the University College Dublin (UCD), has passed away following a brief illness. Prof Garvin had significant educational history at UCD, where he imparted knowledge to many generations. He was an alumnus of the same university, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and politics, as well as a Master of Arts degree in politics.
Upon his retirement from teaching duties in August 2008, after a 41-year tenure, he earned the title of emeritus professor. He achieved a doctorate from the University of Georgia in 1974, proceeded to become a political professor at UCD in 1991, headed the department until 2005, and even gained membership in the Royal Irish Academy in 2003.
Prof Garvin’s extensive written contributions to 20th-century Irish politics, ranged from the revolutionary era to the post-independence state, including a multitude of articles, book chapters, and volumes. His career spanned over four decades which he dedicated to the UCD School of Politics and International Relations before finally retiring in 2008.
Both former colleagues and students took to social media to express their respect and reminisce about their experiences with him. They hailed Prof Garvin’s intellect, creativity, and knack for storytelling. He was commended by others in the academic world, such as the Irish Studies department at Boston College where he once served, and by editors like Daniel McConnell of Business Post.
Prof Garvin’s passing happened on a Thursday after a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife Máire, as well as his children and grandchildren. His final rites are set to take place at the Church of the Holy Cross, Dundrum, on the forthcoming Monday.
