Additional charges are set to be levelled against two men from Kerry, both of whom stand accused in conjunction with the largest seizure of crystal meth in the nation’s history, according to the details emerged during Wednesday’s session at Tralee District Court.
Nathan McDonnell, 43, a resident of Ballyroe in Tralee, is facing charges of owning methylamphetamine for intentions of sale or supply. These allegations stem from incidents purported to have occurred between October 27, 2023, and February 12, 2024, situated at Ballyseedy Garden Centre in Tralee, Kerry County.
James Leen, a 41-year-old from Pilgrim Hill, Kilmorna, Listowel in Kerry, is under scrutiny for identical charges. Furthermore, allegations against Mr Leen include importing methylamphetamine on October 16, 2023, at Cork Port, Ringaskiddy, Cork County.
Both men initially faced their charges during an exclusive session of Tralee District Court on February 23 of the previous year and have since been in ongoing custody. They are presented to the court every two weeks via a video link.
Mr Leen made another court appearance via video link from Cork Prison during the Tralee District Court’s weekly session this Wednesday. The State Solicitor, Diane Reidy, mentioned that the DPP had given orders on Tuesday afternoon for additional charges and requested for a two-week remand in custody.
Ms Reidy also confirmed that The Book of Evidence would be prepared by July 30. Pat Mann, Mr Leen’s solicitor, had no opposition to the ongoing remand, stating that the case was “progressing” given this information.
Shortly thereafter, co-accused Nath McDonnell made his appearance from Portlaoise Prison through a video link. Ms Reidy requested a similar application for Mr McDonnell. His solicitor, Padraig O’Connell, said a further remand was “acceptable.” He stated he was unaware of the nature of the new charges but insisted on the production of The Book of Evidence without delay.
Judge David Waters ordered both men to continue their custody and to be physically present at Tralee District Court on July 17.
