Two men have been apprehended by the police following the gruesome discovery of a deceased male in the town of Ballina, Mayo County on Wednesday. The police were summoned to a disturbance at a residential building on Tone Street, Ballina, slightly after 11.45 in the late evening. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man in his late fifties severely injured within an apartment. Despite their best efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the location.
The two men, aged in their late twenties and early thirties, were taken into custody and transported to a northwest police station. The stipulations of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 are currently holding them in detention.
Officers have informed the local coroner, and a request has been put forth for the services of the Garda technical bureau and State Pathologist. The location has been sealed for further inspection and undergoing a post-mortem examination has been scheduled.
In relation to this investigation, a senior officer has been designated the role of lead investigator. Additionally, an incident room has been established at the Ballina Police Station, and the family of the victim has been allocated a family liaison officer for support during this difficult time.
The police are reaching out to the public for potential witnesses to this incident. They are particularly interested in any CCTV or dashcam footage obtained from the nearby vicinity of Tone Street during the time of the incident.
