“Trump Consents to September Harris Debate”

Previous American president, Donald Trump, affirmed on the previous Friday that he has consented to face Vice President Kamala Harris in a debate on the 4th of September. Fox News is set to organise and host the event. If history is to be written, it will be the second election debate and the inaugural between Mr Trump and the latest Democratic contender.

In a recent social media update by Mr Trump, he stated that this proposed debate is intended to occur in Pennsylvania, a crucial state in swinging the election’s outcome. The Fox News debate would be presided over by their anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

Uncertainties persist regarding Ms Harris’s concurrence with the terms of the debate. The Harris campaign has shown no response to comments sought, neither has Fox News indicated their standpoint on the matter.

Mr Trump voiced that the forthcoming Fox News debate would take place in the presence of live spectators; the past standoff between Mr Trump and President Joe Biden took place in a deserted venue. Despite the agreed format of the first debate, Mr Trump has expressed his discontent about the absence of an audience in the past.

Mr Trump has also vocalised that he is “entirely ready to accept” Ms Harris as the new choice of the Democrats. Mr Trump defines her sudden rise, following Mr Biden’s withdrawal from the race, as a “coup” within the Democratic board. The former president communicated his displeasure about the alteration in his opponents in his debate announcement.

The ex-president asserted in his recent social media update, “They introduced a new candidate into the fray, just as I had spent hundreds of millions of dollars, time and effort defeating Joe. I managed to win the debate,” hoping to connect Ms Harris with Mr Biden’s strategies.

The initial presidential debate between Mr Biden and Mr Trump, moderated by CNN, was deemed highly influential by experts. While Mr Biden was hesitant throughout the debate, Mr Trump’s recurrent propagation of inaccuracies stood in stark contrast.

Mr Biden’s unclear answers heightened apprehensions regarding his age, health and competence to win against Mr Trump in the general election, among his fellow Democrats. These concerns, coupled with declining survey results and growing pressure from supporters, led Biden to declare his exit from the race on 21st July.

Ms Harris, has invited Mr Trump for a debate, expressing disapproval for his prior hesitation to set a date, despite his earlier willingness to engage Mr Biden in a debate ‘whenever, wherever’. This narrative was first reported in The New York Times and belongs to The New York Times Company, 2024.
