“Tributes Pour for Retired DJ Finnegan”

Longtime host of Galway Bay FM’s morning programme, Keith Finnegan, has drawn the curtain on his 34-year stint at the radio station. His tenure, marked by an affection for his community, a questioning mindset, and his distinct charisma, earned him praise from Ireland’s President, Michael D Higgins, and the Taoiseach, Simon Harris.

Finnegan’s era at Galway’s primary morning radio show came to an end this past Friday, following over 30 years of captivating listeners with a microphone in hand. The president sent his heartfelt condolences to Finnegan, thanking him for his insightful commentary and dedicated exploration of Galway’s unique spirit.

Finnegan’s journey with Galway Bay FM started back in 1989 under the monicker Radio West, and his presence on the network became integral in the mid-90s when he debuted as the host of Galway Talks. This position, he held up until his last day.

By voicing gratitude on Finnegan’s behalf, Taoiseach Simon Harris, extensively lauded Finnegan’s unwavering and passionate commitment to both broadcasting and advocating for the critical causes in Galway, notably in relation to the hospice movement.

Mr Harris mentioned, “On your final day of broadcasting, I’m profoundly delighted to join you for my first-ever interview as Taoiseach. I want to express my gratitude on behalf of your wide-ranging listeners and numerous individuals around Ireland for your exceptional broadcasting tenure, primarily your 34 years at Galway Bay FM”.

Reflecting on his departure, the legendary broadcaster acknowledged the unwavering support he received from his fellow staff members, family, and faithful listeners, prompting him to reminisce about unforgettable times in his career including high-profile interviews and esteemed events such as taking part in the St. Patrick’s Day festivities at the White House on behalf of Ireland.

“As I bid my listeners goodbye after nearly 34 long years and over 20,000 hours on air, I am profoundly thankful for having had the opportunity to serve the Galway community. Even though this phase of my life is concluding, I am excitedly awaiting stepping into new avenues, always keeping my beloved connection to Galway Bay FM close to my heart,” he expressed to his listeners.
