A 93-year-old woman has tragically passed away in a residential fire in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo. The deceased, identified by local individuals as Mary Beatrice McNicholas, a former nurse, was declared dead at her residence on Monday afternoon.
Her sibling, Oliver, who resides in a different part of the dwelling, was rushed to Mayo University Hospital due to complications from smoke inhalation. Local councillor John Caulfield, paid tribute to McNicholas, stating on Tuesday, “Mary B was a part of a highly esteemed and beloved family.”
Mary, who hailed from a large family of ten siblings in Treenagleragh, not far from Kiltimagh, remained unmarried throughout her life. She pursued her nursing career in the UK before returning to work at a hospital in Dublin, Ireland. Upon retirement, she chose to move back to her hometown, Kiltimagh.
A family member characterised Mary as “a delightful woman and a tremendous nurse” while adding, “She maintained a reserved lifestyle, but possessed a fantastic sense of humor and was full of life.”
Mayo Fire Services were alerted to the house fire by local police on Monday afternoon. Postmortem procedures are scheduled to take place at Mayo University Hospital. Furthermore, a file for the local coroner is being compiled and an inquest will be set up in the coming time.
The police have expressed that they don’t suspect anything suspicious about the fire incident but they have sealed off the premises for a complete inquiry.
