The small East Mayo town, Swinford, has been deeply disturbed by a fatal overnight fire that claimed the lives of a well-known local couple. The fire blazed at Deerpark, on the town’s periphery, around 2am. The pair’s deaths, and the circumstances surrounding them, have left the community in a state of shock. A town resident, struggling to contain his emotions, referred to the incident as an “absolute catastrophe”.
By the time the fire brigade arrived, it was evident that the residence was already fiercely on fire. A nearby inhabitant characterised the fire as “an utter inferno”. The Gardaí have now cordoned off the house, awaiting a comprehensive forensic investigation. Fire crew members remain on-site, attempting to extinguish the last of the fire and secure the remains of the domestic property.
The story is unfolding, and further updates will follow.
