Totem, a creative agency located in Waterford, is set to grow after accumulating two awards during a recent industry event in the UK. The company’s success, coupled with the increasing demand for their services in recent times, has led them to plan for a significant expansion. They aim to double in size within the coming three years. The enterprise, established by Colin Byrne in his home garage in 2002, currently employs seven individuals in Dungaravan, Co Waterford.
After conducting market research in both the UK and Europe, Mr. Byrne confirmed the agency’s dedication to growth. He believes that an ideal agency size lays somewhere between 12 to 14 staff members. This optimal size balances the company’s commitment to providing quality service without losing their hands-on approach.
Totem received recognition for its exemplary naming strategy by securing a bronze medal at the esteemed Transform Awards Europe in London. The company also received commendation in the brand development project category.
Both awards were bestowed due to Totem’s innovative rebranding strategy deployed for the French bioscience firm Aton, formerly Hybergenics. According to Mr. Byrne, these triumphs will serve as an impetus for the planned expansion.
Totem’s impressive portfolio also boasts high-profile clients such as DAA, a renowned airport operator for whom it has developed campaigns for Cork Airport, and Eurofins, a prominent life sciences company based in Luxembourg.
Despite a downturn in branding expenditure in recent years due to business budget cuts and broader economic fluctuations, Mr. Byrne stated that business dealings had improved in early 2024, indicating a positive outlook for the industry.
“Undoubtedly, I observed a sluggish initiation of projects last year,” he remarked. “However, there has been a significant shift at the start of this year, the situation has completely reversed. Particularly in the first quarter, there has been quite a change. Those who were delaying decisions towards the close of the previous year have made up their minds to act, which is encouraging.”
