“Thousands Participate in Pieta’s Annual Fundraiser”

On an annual basis, Pieta, the self-harm and suicide prevention charity, organises the ‘Darkness into Light’ walk. This year saw thousands participating from multiple locations, both domestic and international, totalling an estimated 230 spots. Organisers have stated they anticipate the count to exceed 100,000 participants.

The walk begins before dawn and concludes at sunrise, in a symbolic gesture aimed at offering hope to individuals struggling with distress or those affected by someone’s suicide. The route of 5km often sees walkers starting from disparate points such as schools, GAA clubs and churches.

This charity event has been a staple since its inception at Phoenix Park, Dublin in 2009, which drew a crowd of around 400 walkers. It was later extended to include international venues in 2012. As we usher in the morning light this Saturday, it is clear the event continues to resonate and engage a broad community in support of vital mental health issues.
