Horse Racing
The annual four-day event, the Cheltenham Festival, is eagerly anticipated by jump-racing enthusiasts, especially those from Ireland who congregate in large numbers in Gloucestershire each year around St Patrick’s Day. The festival highlights numerous Grade One races; the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the Stayers’ Hurdle, and notably the Gold Cup on Friday. – Viewers can enjoy it on UTV & Virgin Media from Tuesday to Friday.
Cycling
Professional cycling’s most esteemed one-day event, the Milan–San Remo, also referred to as the Spring Classic, is held annually in the north-west region of Italy. Its length, just shy of 300km, makes it the longest single-day cycling race. Recognised as the informal launch of the cycling season and having been won twice by Sean Kelly, La Classicissima remains a significant event. – It will be broadcasted on Eurosport this Saturday.
Hurling
This coming St Patrick’s weekend, as always, showcases several appealing college finals. This includes the Leinster Schools Senior Cup rugby final at the RDS Arena and the All-Ireland Senior Football Final in Croke Park. St Kieran’s College will compete against St Raphael’s College, Loughrea in the All-Ireland Colleges Hurling Final, which is part of the same event as the football climax. The Kilkenny team, dominant forces in the contest, astoundingly find themselves in the All-Ireland final for the ninth consecutive time, despite having lost only twice before. Conversely, a school from outside Munster or Leinster has only won the title once in the competition’s 80-year history. That was St Raphael’s in 1995. – The match will air on TG4 on Saturday.
