I found your piece concentrating on Georgia’s critical role in the imminent U.S. presidential election of 2024 rather compelling (Steven Carroll, World, October 23rd). It triggered reflection on certain unique aspects of the U.S. political framework.
Firstly, an inconceivably small number of electors, comparable to mere hundreds within the Irish populace, hold the potential to determine the outcome of a globally significant election such as this. Secondly, it’s rather ironic that these influential decision-makers are, in fact, inadequately supported by the very system they help shape.
Comparatively, if such an election were to occur in Ireland, considerations for the ‘swing’ electorate would probably extend to home subsidies, personal gadget cases and ubiquitous cycle stands rather than mere quadrennial political gatherings.
It’s indeed bewildering that they who hold the reins of the leading free world’s future are only acknowledged at sparse intervals. Truly an odd system to behold.
