I’d like to weigh in on the matter raised by Nuala Gallagher in her letter titled “Kardashian accents” (19th September) – an occurrence named ‘vocal fry’. This is primarily, although not solely, found amongst women who purposely lower their voice to yield a raspy sound.
Contrary to its descriptor, vocal fry isn’t an accent but it spreads like one. The origin of it appears to be in the United States but it has now extended to other English-speaking nations, including, regretfully, Ireland. It’s progressively making its way into RTÉ and commonly showcased on YouTube.
Regrettably, similar to the Dart accent, it looks like vocal fry is here to stay up until it is succeeded by a different voice modulation in the future.
