On Saturday morning, two deceased males in their forties were discovered in Dublin’s renowned Grand Canal. Shortly past eight o’clock in the morning, Gardaí were alerted about a body floating in the canal at Grand Parade and promptly thereafter, they retrieved the corpses of two men from the water and they were declared dead at the location.
These men have already been recognised by the Gardaí and an autopsy is scheduled to take place soon. The area has been cordoned off by the Gardaí, maintaining the scene intact while the investigation is ongoing.
There is a presumption that these men had taken up residence in two tents in the vicinity of the site where their bodies were dredged up from the canal. Their camping site was directly across a provisional refugee encampment where international protection applicants have been taking shelter.
One volunteer, who was present when the ambulance arrived, expressed concerns about the dangerously precarious location of these tents which were alarmingly close to where safety barricades had been set up.
