The prime positions within the Home

Dear Sir,

The reference in the piece written by Rahul Bedi about India’s general election drew my attention; it pointed out that the country, which is the biggest democracy globally, boasts 968 million electorate and 545 representatives in the lower chamber of their parliament (“The commencement of the world’s most extensive democratic endeavour with 968 million electorates and 545 seats is in India”, World, 19th April).

Approximately 3.5 million individuals are listed on our electoral register. If we applied India’s ratio of seats to voters to this figure, it would result in the allocation of two TDs in the Dáil Éireann.

I only thought to bring it up. With kindest regards,

PAT O’BRIEN,
