The pressing issue of global warming – a problem demanding joint efforts

Dear Editor,

I was taken aback in a week where it has been verified that the previous year was the warmest in recorded history, and yet you chose to print the clichéd argument of climate change whataboutism that Ireland’s decrease in greenhouse gas emissions will not meaningfully affect global emission levels (“Fantasy assumptions on climate goals”, Letters, June 6th). There are only six countries that currently contribute to more than 2% of the global total emission. All other nations might see themselves as “insignificant”. Yet together, these nations contribute to over a third of the global emissions, surpassing that of even China.

The issue of climate change calls for a united effort. Every nation must do their part. It’s a concept that should not be hard to grasp.

Sincerely,
Dr. Gavin Daly,
Dublin 1.
