The Planning Legislation and President Higgins

Dear Sir, – I noted the query raised by Dave Alvey in his letter dated October 19th, questioning why the move by Michael D Higgins, our President, in relation to the Planning Bill has been labelled by legal professionals as “quite abnormal” (“Uncommon for President to voice apprehension about Planning Bill without sending it to Supreme Court”, News, October 17th).

In my understanding, the President should have brought the Bill, if he thought it unconstitutional, before the Supreme Court. This is his role, as people like Roy Keane could argue.

If this wasn’t the case, it would have been prudent for him to restrain his personal opinions and avoid providing commentary on the subject.

Despite lacking legal expertise, Mr Higgins seems to take pleasure in the spotlight over this issue and countless others. – Kind regards,
MATTHEW GLOVER,
Lucan,
Co Dublin.
