The Mammoth Redwood of the Southside

Marion Walsh laments the decline of the Giant Redwood located in the Botanic Gardens, as highlighted by Fionnuala Ward in the Irishwoman’s Diary, dated April 29th. She brings to attention an additional Giant Redwood located in the southern part of Dublin, which was planted by George Roe, a whisky trader, no later than 1863 in his estate at Nutley. This estate is presently known as the Elm Park Golf and Sports Club. The reason behind the presence of this magnificent tree is Roe’s collaboration with the director of the National Botanic Gardens and esteemed botanist Ninian Niven who was commissioned to design a garden and lake at Nutley. The message is signed off by Marion Walsh from Dublin 4.
