The legacy of Lise Meitner endures

Dear Editor,

Despite the fact that Lise Meitner, the initiator of nuclear fission, didn’t receive the recognition of the Nobel Prize, her legacy continues to flourish (“The Nobel Committee unfairly omitted Lise Meitner, the pioneer of nuclear fission”, a piece by William Reville in the Science section, dated 1st August). The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s library is proudly named the Lise Meitner Library in her honour. Alongside this, the IAEA, based in Vienna – Meitner’s place of birth, has created the Lise Meitner Programme dedicated to advancing the careers of women.

Yours truly,
Dr John Doherty,
Former Medical Director of the IAEA from 1993 to 2008,
Co Dhún na nGall.
