A 58-year-old woman tragically lost her life in the most recent roadway accident on N17 within southern Mayo. The victim, identified by local residents as Andrea Gornowicz, relocated from Germany to Ireland approximately two decades ago. Unmarried, Ms. Gornowicz found employment in a supermarket located in Claremorris.
It was a fatal road incident involving three vehicles on the N17 close to Ballindine, occurring just prior to noon on a Thursday, that took her life. It is believed by the Gardaí that Ms. Gornowicz was on her way home when her car was hit from behind, sending it into the trajectory of an approaching vehicle.
The incident has drawn fresh scrutiny toward the safety of a section of the N17 in the Claremorris/Ballindine region, which has seen multiple fatal events in the last year. Notably, in March, a devastating accident on the N17 cost the lives of Una Bowden (47) and her two daughters, Ciara (14) and Saoirse (9), just a short drive away from Claremorris. They were residents of Moycullen in western Galway.
