In September 2019, Adam Fleetwood and Eve Whittaker, the former head chef at Lotts & Co, launched Greenville Deli in Tara Street, Dublin 2. Following the effects of the pandemic, they ventured into supplying suburban coffee shops with sandwiches on a wholesale basis. Then, they branched out with their openings in Inchicore in March 2021 and Rathmines in June the same year. Their Tara Street outlet was shut down and was succeeded by their third outlet in Monkstown in September 2023.
In Rathmines, they run a central kitchen managed by Head Chef Marcin Kepinski. They serve sandwiches, salads, breakfast pots, soup, and baked items. All sandwiches are made with bread sourced from Bretzel bakery. Specifics of toasties, sandwiches, and soup are displayed on a board. Their salad selection is made available in their refrigerator. Simultaneously, they function as a chic coffee shop storing wine, pasta, condiments, and Bread 41 sourdough on their shelves.
What was ordered from their menu included an Asian pulled pork sandwich, the weekly gourmet phenomenon – Tuscan chicken, and the sizeable couscous tabbouleh salad comprising squash and quinoa bites.
Their service was commendably prompt and friendly. Due to the availability of vacant tables, they chose to dine in. All sandwiches were freshly made as per order and were served at the table, accompanied by a carafe of water and glasses.
The food was splendid and definitely met the culinary standards and expectations associated with Greenville Deli.
The generously sized sandwiches, accompanied with a petite bag of chips and dip, are quite appetising. The bread is perfectly toasted, with the Tuscan chicken (not free-range) being a delightful medley of chicken, bacon and mozzarella. Improving its appeal is the fact that it’s not smothered in pesto. A different offering, the Asian pulled pork sandwich, boasts slow-cooked pork that’s mildly spiced. It also comes with a slaw mix of red cabbage and carrots, pickled cucumber, rocket and peanut rayu aioli for added taste. Additionally, there’s a refreshing salad that features rocket, roasted red peppers, pomegranate seeds, tomato, and tabbouleh, complemented with a verdant coriander dressing. The quinoa and squash bites, though a bit heavy on the couscous, are pleasantly moist and tasty. It could benefit, however, from incorporating more herbs and tomatoes.
As for packaging, it’s mainly eco-friendly. The sandwiches arrive in paper bags, wrapped in paper, and the salad’s cardboard container alongside the plastic lid are recyclable, provided they’re clean. There’s even a recycling bin available on the location.
The cost is reasonable, with a lunch for three priced at €26.50. This includes the Asian pulled pork sandwich at €9, the Tuscan chicken sandwich for €9.50, and the couscous and tabbouleh salad at €8.
