The Epiq, a new crossover by Skoda, is set to target competitors such as the Jeep Avenger and the Hyundai Kona EV. Becoming the most affordable electric offering of the Czech automobile manufacturer, it will be launched in Ireland in the upcoming year.
Modelled as an electric complement to the existing Kamiq crossover, the Epiq’s compactness, with a mere 4.1-metre length, won’t hinder its spacious boot area. It is claimed by Skoda to offer up to 490 litres of cargo space, thus becoming one of the most capacious vehicles in its segment.
Skoda’s price strategy aims for an approximate €25,000 in Europe, intending to restrain the Epiq cost below €30,000 once released in Ireland, provided the equity of grants and rebates.
The Epiq presents a refreshed design trend for Skoda, with the traditional arrowhead logo making its exit, substituted by the brand name written out in trim, clear letters. Moreover, the car boasts a slim grille flanked with recessed LED headlights and a vertical-slot front bumper, a noteworthy ‘Tech-Deck’ feature. The vehicle’s rear displays a sloping roof pillar, allowing a slightly sporty silhouette.
Although the Epiq is currently a ‘design study,’ it is expected to bear a significant resemblance to the final product. Skoda’s Head of Design, Oliver Stefani, expressed that their ‘Modern Solid’ design language is the next step in modern aesthetic, blending smart functionality and appealing looks with a sustainable approach.
The introduction of this new design will first be seen in the all-electric Elroq. Slated for a late-year release, the Elroq is speculated to sit in between the Epiq and the larger Enyaq in dimensions.
Preserving a minimalist style within its interior, the Skoda’s cabin still possesses physical buttons on its dual-spoke steering wheel, with an additional unconnected one, and below its vast central touchscreen, according to the manufacturer. The gears are now shifted through a column stalk, freeing up more room for abundant storage spots in the central console, which includes a space for wireless phone charging. Furthermore, a deceptive floor in the boot reveals generous storage space beneath. The Epiq also proudly employs recycled materials in the interior and exterior design.
Deriving its name from the term ‘epic’, while retaining the Skoda signature ‘Q’ ending for its SUV range, the Epiq has a large task ahead given the increasingly crowded EV market. It faces internal competition from classic VW, who are intending to launch an electric crossover similar in size, based on the ID2, and Cupra with its already revealed Raval compact EV.
The Spanish VW Group’s factory in Pamplona will undertake the production of the Epiq, alongside the two aforementioned cars.
Skoda’s CEO, Klaus Zellmer indicated that the forthcoming Skoda Epiq promises to deliver an impressive car packed with substantial features at a remarkable price. Also, it will sport a compact size but a spacious interior. He reiterated that customer choices matter, hence Skoda’s decision to broaden its burgeoning e-mobility portfolio into this favoured segment. He further expressed hope that the Epiq’s contemporary design, user-friendly technology, and functional range, available at a reasonable price, will be its shining attributes.
