The Fading Glow

I write to you reminiscing the occasion when you were generous enough to feature my letter titled ‘Light-bulb moment’ on April 4th, 2018. I had previously written about an enduring light bulb I’d gotten as a participation gift from RTÉ’s Late Late Show in September 1998.

This longevity champion was none other than a Philips SL9 Comfort 9W 350 lumen/230 v-50Hz bulb, a part of the ‘gift for every audience’ segment. After 26 years of brilliant illumination, the bulb flickered out last night, marking an end to its impressive lifespan. Perhaps this is a record of some sort?

In other news, a compelling portrayal of an alcoholic on a turbulent path to recovery was given by Saoirse Ronan in ‘The Outrun’. Niamh O’Sullivan, a singer who declares her life incomplete without singing, has caught my attention as well.

In personal reflections, I can’t seem to shake off the memory of the day I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s- the absolute sense of despair remains unforgettable. And how could I forget the shutdown of the Dublin branch of Wagamama – even Meat Loaf’s drummer, although open to dining out, won’t be spotted there.

Things, once lost or ended, will never be the same again.

Warm regards,
MICHAEL C O’CONNOR,
Waterford.
