The event of Lá Mór na Gaeilge transpires in Smithfield Square

Today, Smithfield Square, a historically significant site in Dublin known for its dynamic marketplace and public gatherings, adapts to host Lá Mór na Gaeilge. This annual celebration of the Irish language has been supported by Dublin City Council and is now in its third year.

From noon to 5pm, the square will play host to a variety of acts including Louise Mulcahy, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Tadhg, Ispíní na hÉireann, Doireann Ní Ghlacáin, and Danny O’Reilly from The Coronas. The event promises to be fun for all ages and is free of charge.

Dublin’s Lord Mayor, Daithí de Róiste, has expressed anticipation and excitement for the festival. “We are presenting a wonderful line-up and a range of family-oriented activities at this year’s event. Something for everyone will be on offer,” he stated.

This year, the theme is “An Ghaeilge – Lig Isteach Í – Let Irish In”, intending to motivate individuals to embrace and utilise the Irish language regardless of their proficiency.

Events range from a bodhrán (an Irish drum) workshop to “speed friending” sessions held in Irish. The festival will also provide a cultural exchange, various myths to bust, and a host of other activities.

Family-friendly activities have not been forgotten – there will be an entertaining programme with magic shows, bilingual story-telling, street performances, giant games, and face painting, in addition to the creation of balloon animals.

According to Lord Mayor De Róiste, one doesn’t need to be an expert in the Irish language to participate. He encourages Dubliners to support this event as their participation will enhance its growth and success in the coming years. “Come to Smithfield this Sunday and take advantage of all the fantastic features of the festival,” he invited.
