Gentleman,
Might I propose an alternative method of honouring Wimbledon victors next year? As opposed to the £2.7 million (€3.24 million) each champion usually receives, for their fortnight of meticulous tennis matches, might we consider a more bespoke token. An eloquent card graced with the words “Greatness can’t be bought” could replace the traditional monetary reward (as mentioned in Letters, September 25th).
Should this new approach be well-received, we could effectively expand it to other well-off athletes such as golfers and footballers. Meanwhile, the prize money that was previously awarded can be generously donated to charity.
Yours faithfully,
Gerard Reynolds,
Dublin 16.
