The bronze gong of London’s Financial District

“Dear Editor – I occasionally tune into global television news networks where I witness the live opening of a trading day at the Wall Street’s New York Stock Exchange at precisely half past nine according to their local time.

The initiation of the trading day is signaled by the ringing of a traditional brass bell, undertaken by an invited celebrity or a representative from one of the leading trading firms. This ceremony is met with enthusiastic applause and triumphant cheers from the gathered bystanders, witnessing this spectacle, their reactions seeming as though they have just become winners of a jackpot in some lottery.

One finds oneself at odds to understand their overzealous behaviour.

Yours faithfully,
Pádraic Harvey,
An Cheathrú Rua,
Co na Gaillimhe.”
