In Waterford city, a teenage boy was tragically killed and another was critically injured in an accident involving a bus and an electric scooter. The Gardai reported that the mishap occurred on the R680 Cork Road at roughly 1:10am on a Thursday. “We report with deep regret that a teenage boy operating the electric scooter has been confirmed dead at the collision site,” the state law enforcement agency declared. They further noted that another boy, also in his teenage years and riding on the same scooter, was rushed to Waterford University Hospital with severe injuries.
The bus operator, the only individual in the vehicle, escaped unscathed. The Cork Road in Waterford was cordoned off from the South East Technological University to the ring road on that Thursday morning. This closure was necessary for the Garda forensic collision experts to conduct a technical examination of the scene. Local diversions were established.
The Gardaí are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the accident, especially those with dash-cam footage, to immediately make contact with the Waterford Garda station at (051) 305300 or any neighbouring Garda station. The Garda Confidential Line could be reached at 1800 666 111. The lethal incident marks the 91st fatality on this year’s State roads, reflecting an increase of nine from the same time period in the previous year.
