Gilbert Collins, aged 15, tragically lost his life in an e-scooter accident, which also led to the untimely demise of his best mate Avu Idris. A touching service to bid him adieu occurred in his native Ballybeg, Waterford on a Tuesday afternoon, seeing a large crowd of mourners.
In the sea of mourners were Gilbert’s dad, Bobby, mum, Ronke, siblings Marvellous, Albert, and Precious, alongside hundreds from the local community. They bid their final goodbyes, remembering Gilbert as a vibrant teenager who injected zest into all his activities.
Sporting the jersey of Waterford Crystal Football Club – a symbol of their beloved friend, Gilbert’s teammates stood tall at Kilbarry cemetery. His classmates from St Paul’s Community College also accompanied the hearse to his final place of rest.
Precious, Gilbert’s sister, remembered her brother as a lively young man treasured by all their family. “He’d be revelling in the attention he’s getting now, probably chuckling at us all,” she noted.
As she referenced the Book of Genesis, she expressed her everlasting love for Gilbert. “Though brief, Gilbert’s life was full of unforgettable moments. His memory persists in us all. I am my brother’s keeper; I’ll continue loving you and honouring your name,” she professed.
Bobby, Gilbert’s father, offered gratitude to the local community and Gilbert’s friends for their backing, during a brief speech at the service. Just before Gilbert’s body was taken to the cemetery, Marvellous shared a heartfelt tribute. “Gilbert’s cheerful smile and laughter are etched in my memory. It reminds us to cherish our dear ones as life is unpredictable,” he said.
The service for Avu Idris is scheduled for Thursday.
