Taoiseach Simon Harris intends to propose a nominee for the chair of the long-anticipated Covid evaluation committee to his Cabinet members. Ahead of the scheduled meeting at Government Buildings, Harris confirmed his plan to suggest a candidate, who is of Irish nationality, for approval by the Cabinet.
Harris highlighted the importance of scrutinising the government’s response to the COVID pandemic, recognising successful strategies and considering what could be improved in readiness for potential future pandemics. He stressed the significance of the lessons learnt during what has been an exceptionally challenging time for the nation.
Harris was also queried as to the commencement of the Covid investigation, to which he responded by stating that the proceedings would initiate with the appointment of a chairperson and panel. He emphasised the independence of the chair and suggested the methodology of the inquiry would be determined by the chair and panel. The Taoiseach expressed the importance of examining different investigation models used elsewhere.
Moreover, Harris acknowledged the catastrophic implications of Covid on an individual and global scale, particularly in Ireland, underlining the urgency and necessity of the evaluation. He noted that decisions, made promptly and based on the information accessible at the time, need retrospective analysis to identify potential improvements and future actions.
In addition, Harris extended his sympathies and solidarity to the residents of Spain affected by the devastating flash floods that occurred in the eastern regions of the country, causing more than 60 fatalities.
