Simon Harris, the Prime Minister of Ireland, has praised US President Joe Biden for his global leadership and approach to effective multilateralism and mutual solutions. After President Biden released the news that he does not intend to run for re-election, Harris stated his appreciation for Biden’s dedication to global affairs and expressed enjoyment for further cooperation during his remaining tenure.
Harris further elaborated on Biden’s understanding and early recognition of Russia’s assault on Ukraine, describing it as not merely an unlawful invasion of a neighbouring state by a permanent UN Security Council member, but a transgression against international norms and democratic liberty. Harris also recollected their phone conversation last month, where they discussed the possibility of establishing a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Gaza led by Israel. He expressed hope for the successful implementation of the plan which is currently the only viable option to mitigate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, liberate captives and enable the free flow of aid.
Commenting on more personal matters, Harris praised Biden for his unwavering commitment to maintain peace in Ireland throughout his political career, stating that the nation is greatly indebted to him. He further described Biden as an individual who is deeply rooted in his American heritage but retains an Irish heart, a sentiment that was clear when Biden spoke about feeling like ‘coming home’ during his visits to Belfast, Louth, and Mayo.
Meanwhile, Micheál Martin, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed both sorrow and respect on hearing President Biden’s decision not to seek re-election. He lauded Biden as a steadfast friend of Ireland who has provided unwavering support for the nation’s peace and prosperity. He reminisced about Biden’s visit last year, characterising it as a joyful celebration of Irish-American relations. Martin also acknowledged the difficulty of Biden’s decision, but praised how it was made with dignity and class, and expressed Ireland’s well wishes for Biden’s future.
