Taking It Easy in Cork

Dear Reader,

I was intrigued by “Slowing down in Portugal” (Letters, 21st of September). It indeed presents an innovative approach to control traffic. One might say that in the city and outskirts of Cork, the responsibility of slowing commuters down is evidently achieved by the slow, tedious journey towards a set of a red signals, where the majority, if not all, of the next signals are also red when you approach them. Unquestionably, this does manage to keep traffic well below the 50 km/h barrier.

Although, there are days when I find myself conflicted about this frequent occurrence questioning whether this reflects effective traffic management, mismanagement or simply karma.

– Yours faithfully,
GRAEME McLEAN,
From Cork.
