“Suspected Hatchet Attacker Receives Custodial Care”

A male suspect connected with a Dundalk attack on three female relatives is still being held by the Garda. His detention period was temporarily halted for him to receive hospital care. The three ladies, one of whom is 80 years old and the most critically injured, are familiar with the accused. All victims were admitted to the hospital for further treatment following the assault which is thought to have involved use of a hatchet in the Glenwood Estate last Friday afternoon.

An alert was triggered with paramedics swiftly attending to the wounded before they were taken for further medical attention. The crime scene, including the house and garden where the assault transpired, were cordoned off for scrutiny by the Garda Technical Bureau. The ongoing criminal investigation into the assault is being overseen by Dundalk gardaí.

The suspect was apprehended at the crime scene under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act on Friday afternoon, which permits 24 hours for suspect interrogation. However, this can be paused if the suspect needs rest or medical care. It appears that due to his need for extensive medical treatment, the suspect’s 24-hour Garda interrogation period had been paused and not yet finished as of Sunday.
