“Summer Statement: End of Prudence?”

In the latest Summer Economic Statement released by the Government on Tuesday, details on the tax and spending for the upcoming October budget were outlined. The budget’s structure reveals a substantial tax and spending allocation of €8.3 billion, making it one of the most sizable in State history, discounting the years influenced by Covid and cost of living adjustments. This has led to rumours of a prospective general election in November.

This week on Inside Business, Ciarán Hancock is joined by Eoin Burke-Kennedy and Cliff Taylor to examine the key figures of the statement and the dispersal of the €8.3 billion budget.

In the latter half of the programme, we hear insights from Martin Muller, a geography and sustainability professor from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Muller has been analysing the expenses and returns for host cities of major events such as the Olympic Games. After considerable preparation and billions invested in new facilities and infrastructure, is the host city Paris expected to gain economically from the current year’s games? The production is managed by John Casey with sound by JJ Vernon.
