Striving for Political Cohesion

Sir, Ian d’Alton commences his letter (September 27th), expressing disbelief about Leo Varadkar’s objective for Irish unity, instead of just dreaming about it (“Leo Varadkar: ‘All trends point towards Irish unification in the next few decades’”, News, September 26th).

He asserts that northern unionists can’t picture a future as citizens of an Irish republic. Then, how should we respond to northern nationalists who can visualise this? Are we to uphold a unionist rejection indefinitely? It’s peculiar that Ireland is perhaps the only nation with an ‘aspiration’ penned in its constitution, with no plan to implement this aspiration. Much like several folks in the south, I fear Ian d’Alton doesn’t quite comprehend it. The north has transformed and will continue evolving.

As advised by Leo Varadkar, it’s wise to prepare for this change. Yours sincerely,
