Stephen Teap Appointed Cancer Support CEO

Stephen Teap, a father of two, tragically lost his wife to cancer, a result of shortcomings in the CervicalCheck programme. From this tragedy, Stephen emerged as a tireless advocate for patients’ rights. His dedication to this cause led him to the position of CEO of the Cork Arc Cancer Support House.

Stephen’s spouse, Irene Teap, lived in Carrigaline, County Cork until her untimely passing on July 26th, 2017, at only 35 years old. At the time, their young sons, Oscar and Noah, were merely four and two years old. Irene had been battling Stage two cancer since her diagnosis in 2015 after undergoing two incorrect negative smear tests in 2010 and 2013.

In December 2022, in the High Court, an admittance of liability was made by the HSE, CPL, and Medlab, conceding their neglect of duty of care to Irene which ultimately resulted in her death.

Stephen responded to his wife’s death by demanding responsibility and betterment within the Irish healthcare system. Leveraging his expertise in the financial sector, his extensive experience in the automotive industry, and training in advocacy from the University College Cork, Stephen is set to lead the Cork Arc Cancer Support House.

Stephen shared his elation at his impending CEO role in a post on X. He expressed excitement about joining the incredible charity that has supported those touched by cancer for over two decades—a mission that holds a special place in his heart. He mentioned his initial meeting with the devoted staff and volunteers with enthusiasm.

Stephen’s advocacy for cancer patients has been consistent throughout his life. In 2018, he established the 221+ support group to aid individuals affected by the CervicalCheck controversy, with the assistance of the late Vicky Phelan, Lorraine Walsh, Liz Yeates of the Marie Keating Foundation, and the Irish Cancer Society.

Today, members of the 221+ group receive support packages from the HSE. As well as this, all women involved and their families have formed connections, providing mutual support for the future.

In the wake of Irene’s passing, her remains were scattered in Allihies, located on the Beara Peninsula.
