Statistics on Rough Sleeping

Dear Editor,

The rising incidence of homelessness in our country, especially among children, is alarmingly high and downright disgraceful. The figures are astounding, with a 15% increase within a span of one year pushing the number to 14,760 – a count that includes 4,561 children. I recall a time when the prospect of homelessness reaching 10,000 was a daunting one; today we seem to be steadfastly approaching twice that number. Undoubtedly, many who are homeless may not even be included in this official count.

What is additionally perplexing is the timing of the release of this news. The relevant information was shared on the Friday afternoon of a Bank Holiday weekend – a time when people might be preoccupied with non-work-related activities – rather than on a regular Monday, when attention is properly engaged on such important matters.

Yours faithfully,
Jason Power, Galway
