Sir, the prestige of the World Conker Championship has been severely tarnished due to acts of dishonesty. There are accusations that an artificial conker, made of steel, has been falsely used in the event. My own memories of playing conker games in the playground as a child, where deception and bruised hands were commonplace, never stooped to the low point of utilising a so-called “dark pool sphere” attached to a string – a violation brought to light by your correspondent Malachy Clerkin.
