Are you amongst those affected by the lethal flooding in Spain, are you there for a vacation or are you an Irish resident? Furthermore, have you plans to visit the afflicted territories stretching from Valencia to Malaga?
The most fatal deluge that Spain has experienced in more than 30 years has claimed at least 61 lives this week, according to local sources. The heavy downpour, particularly in the eastern region of Valencia on Tuesday, resulted in the submerging of roads and towns, with endeavours to rescue stranded individuals continuing into the night. Images from Utiel broadcast on TV depicted several rescue efforts on dinghies in the darkness. The attempts by emergency services to reach the worst affected areas are ongoing.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, addressing the nation on TV, conveyed his sympathies to those who continue to search for their missing family members stating, “All of Spain mourns with you at this time”. He pledged his support to the ruined towns and cities, affirming that they will rebuild their infrastructure together.
Despite the rise of murky floodwater enshrouding much of Spain, including the southern provinces like Malaga and the Valencia region in the east, many people were forced to endure the night stranded. El Paīs, a newspaper, reported that while some individuals sought refuge atop cars and lorries with hopes of being rescued, others found themselves on shop and service station rooftops. Rescue operations continued throughout the night and into Wednesday.
